Veterinarians

  • Dr. Erik Strunck , DVM


    Dr. Erik Strunck was born in Pittsburgh, PA, and grew up in Ohio, near Cincinnati. He attended North Carolina State University, obtaining a BS in Animal Science in 1998. Dr. Strunck then attended Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine, graduating with Magna Cum Laude honors in 2003.

    Dr. Strunck has been with the Care First team since graduating in 2003, spending time at the Oberlin, Glenwood, and Falls Pointe locations, before heading up the new hospital at Grace Park in Morrisville. This is actually his second stint with the group, as he did spend a couple of years as a kennel assistant during his undergraduate years at N.C. State.

    Dr. Strunck is a Morrisville resident, and has a happy family at home. His wife, Amy, is also involved in the practice, and takes on administrative duties while not at home with their three children, Ella, Elijah, and Lily. Their house stays busy with two dogs: Jones, a 1.5 year old Great Dane, and Chester, a 9 year old border collie mix. Five cats rule the roost: Ripple (13), Munson (10), Cleo (8), Wiley (3), and Mosley (3).

    Dr. Strunck’s main interests in veterinary medicine are surgery and ultrasonography. While not at work, he enjoys spending time with his family, watching sports, and visiting the North Carolina Mountains for some hiking.

  • Elisa Sumakeris , DVM


    Dr. Elisa Sumakeris is a native of San Francisco California, although she spent most of her childhood in North Carolina. She attended NC State University for her undergraduate work, obtaining a BS in Zoology in 1989. She then obtained her Masters Degree in Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics at UNC-Chapel Hill in 1993. She attended the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine, graduating in the class of 1997.

    Dr. Elisa has been a member of the Care First team for over 20 years, starting out answering the phones after hours and working in the kennels, and then working her way up through a variety of jobs at the practice. After veterinary school, and a brief stint as a large animal veterinarian in Chatham County, she returned to join Care First as a veterinarian in the fall of 1998.

    Dr. Elisa has a very busy household that consists of her husband Joe, and 3 children – Kathryn, age 10; and Joanna and Lucas, both age 6. In addition, her family includes her Labradoodle Biscuit, her cockatiel Dink, chinchillas Roscoe and Cloud, Bella the hamster, and a tank of fish. She and her family live in Carpenter Village in Cary, and her children attend Sterling Montessori Charter School.

    Dr. Elisa enjoys spending time with her family outdoors, especially swimming, camping, and boating at Jordan Lake. She also enjoys gardening, and spends her summer tending a large organic vegetable garden. At the practice, she particularly enjoys internal medicine, microbiology and infectious disease, and behavior.

Management

  • Amy Strunck


    Amy was born on Long Island, NY and grew up in northern Virginia, until her family relocated to Raleigh where she attended North Carolina State University.  She received her BS in Business Management from NC State in 1998.

    Amy joined the CareFirst group while at NCSU as an Animal Care Technician and Transcriptionist. She later returned to CareFirst at Oberlin in 2003 as a Transcriptionist when her husband, Dr. Strunck, rejoined the staff as an associate veterinarian.  Amy now works at the Grace Park location taking care of various administrative duties.

    Amy resides in Morrisville, NC with her husband, Erik, and their three children, Ella, Elijah, and Lily. Additionally, they have two dogs (Chester, a border collie mix, and Jones, a goofy great dane) and five cats (Ripple, Munson, Cleo, Wiley, and Mosley). There is never a dull moment in the Strunck household!

Technicians

  • Taylor C.


    Taylor joined the Care First team in November of 2008.  She was born and raised in Connecticut.  Taylor began her journey south after high school when she attended Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey.  After receiving her Bachelors of Science and spending several years working in a veterinary practice in Princeton, Taylor arrived at her final detination in North Carolina.  Taylor lives with her fiancee and two cats, Smushy and Bug, all of which require feeding several times a day.  In her free time, Taylor enjoys swimming in her pool and taking walks around Lake Lynn.

    Mari is a California native, where the beach meets the smog.  Mari always had a love for other people's pets, since she did not have any growing up.  Since then, she has collected two dogs and a cat of her own.  Mari has three daughters who she loves to spend her time with, and gets spoiled rotten by her husband of 21 years, who loves to cook for her!  Outside of the hospital, Mari enjoys staying in touch with her friends and reading.  At Care First, Mari loves meeting new people and learning something new every day.
